Use a Fieldbus

Just after I got my knickers all in a knot over that article at ControlGlobal.com, I found Jim Cahill come through with a voice of reason.  He presents a case for completing a small trial installation of fieldbus before tackling a big, critical project.  Note that training is a necessary step in the process.

There is absolutely no doubt that a change from the status quo requires some level of education, even if it's trial and error.

Unfortunately in our business, we don't often have this luxury. So training or contracting expertise is usually a good idea.

We're seeing the same thing as folks try wireless sensor networks. I wrote about this yesterday at http://www.emersonprocessxperts.com/archives/2007/10/planning_your_w.html

Your work in educating others, as mine, is to help folks realize the benefits far outweigh the comfort of the status quo.
